British wrestling promotion 5-Star Wrestling has offered CM Punk a contract worth $1 million, to compete in their upcoming championship tournament.
5 Star Wrestling creator Dan Hinkles publicly made the “hugely ambitious” offer, which would see Punk join the company’s June tour, in The Daily Star‘s ‘Fighting Spirit’ column. If Punk accepts, this would be one of the biggest contract signings in British wrestling history.
Hinkles, who launched 5 Star in 2015, said: “Even if it’s a no, we want to know he’s at least heard the offer. It doesn’t get more credible than CM Punk. We all know that if he ever comes back to wrestling it will be one of those all time, epic moments – I want that to be with 5 Star Wrestling.
“We are hugely ambitious. Starting June 10th, we will have a weekly show airing live…We want to fill the show with the biggest stars and the best wrestlers from this country and from all around the world. When we ask the fans who they want to see, CM Punk’s name is on everybody’s wish list and we’re willing to spend big to make it happen.”
5 Star Wrestling has already gained attention for drawing in big names not usually associated with upstart companies; their current roster includes Rey Mysterio, Carlito and current heavyweight champion Johnny Mundo – formerly known as John Morrison.
Former multi-time world champion CM Punk has not wrestled since his departure from WWE in 2014. He has since turned his attention to mixed martial arts and is currently training for a second fight in UFC, following an infamously one-sided defeat at the hands of rookie Mickey Gall.
Acknowledging Punk’s change in career path, Dan Hinkles stated: “I know he is seemingly focused on MMA at the moment and this wouldn’t have to end that, but wrestling’s in his blood and $1 million has to be worth thinking about.”
5 Star Wrestling’s 30-date championship tournament begins at the Liverpool Echo Arena on Saturday, June 10th and concludes at the Manchester Arena on December 30th. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit their website.
